ACC Media Day

The ACC is catching on pretty quick. Promote your product. Host the media at some 5-star location and roll out the red carpet. Play a little golf. Trot out the big name coaches and encourage them to turn on the charm. Roll out some lunch, dinner and maybe mix in a social hour or two. And call it ACC Media Days.

By the way, if you haven't done the Ritz-Carlton/Reynolds Plantation/Oconee Golf Course thing yet, you're missing out on an awesome experience. The ACC was wise to bring this event here. Talk about making a big impression.

Butch Davis arrived in a sharp blue suit and showing off a big championshi ring. North Carolina looks like a 8-9 win team to me. Yates might be set for a big season at QB.

Miami's Randy Shannon is one cool cat. Very personable. Wonder if he can help lead this proud program back to the top? Maybe not this year, the Hurricanes are going with a redshirt freshman QB and a true freshman quarterback. Growing pains can be frustrating.

The Bowden's once again stole the show. But it was Tommy who was holding court first in front of the day's biggest crowd of reporters. He acknowledged that his O-Line and LBs were areas of concern. When asked about the pressure of being selected by the media as the Pre-Season ACC favorite, Coach Bowden chuckled and mentioned something about dealing with pressure every season at Clemson. Tommy attributes the Pre-Season ACC Favorite tag to the media being impressed by the Tigers skilled position players...Davis, Spiller, Harper, Kelly, Ford, Grisham.

Make no mistake, Clemson is the heavy favorite to win the ACC for the first time since 1991.

Bobby Bowden hit the interview room about 15-20 minutes after his son Tommy started holding court, and there was a scramble for the closest chairs, at the table where the FSU legend was sitting. Sort of an uncomfortable moment. Some of these guys dropped Tommy like a bad habit to hang with Dad.

Bobby put cool into to college coaching. And he put Florida State on the map. When Coach Bowden took over 33 years ago, the FSU facilities were dreadful. The team was a loser. How did he do it? Bobby was an innovator. His teams were ahead of the curve offensively in the late '70's, throwing it all over the lot. And he wasn't afraid to load up and play the big name programs on the road. And most importantly, the man communicated with young adults. And he still commmunicates at the age of 78.

Why is he sticking around so long? Is he reluctant to let Penn State's Joe Paterno pass him by on the all-time career wins list? Coach Bowden says it's too good a fight to walk away from. It motivates him. Bobby also wants to go out with the Seminoles back on top in the ACC. Is that possible in 2008? Well, yeah. And Ponder might be the guy at QB. And the defense will be tough.
