Falcons Training Camp
Matt Ryan looks impressive early in camp. In the short to intermediate passing game, he is very accurate and the ball gets out on time. Talking with Matt, he knows come gametime defenses are going to come after him with the blitz. But he is totally focused on where to get rid of the ball, when the heat comes. Don't look for him to be folding up in the pocket, taking sacks. Mature and smart.
New running back Michael Turner is a load. Short and thick. He will be hard to tackle. And the power running game, with Ovie leading him into the hole looks like a winner.
Receiver Brian Finneran is back and looks 100% healthy. Go ahead and pencil him in for a spot on the roster. Dude is strong and towers over the Falcons short CB's. He will help them in the red zone, by being a big target. Mularkey can go big with Finneran and Jenkins at receiver, Hartsock at TE, and Mughelli at FB...and pound Turner at'm. That's a load to deal with.
Rookie Harry Douglas looks like a keeper, which means Jennings spot is in jeopardy. Thomas Brown could grab that #3 RB spot and return kicks.
Sam Baker is a big key to this offense. He's hanging tough right now. Abraham has his number in drills, but Sam is handling the other DE's pretty good. Todd Weiner is taking it slow off knee surgery, but appears to be on track to be there when the whistle blows in game one.
On defense, two rookies need to step up. Chevis Jackson has to help at CB, now that Hutchins is out for the season. He looks capable. Curtis Lofton is battling Tony Taylor for the middle linebacker spot and looks good against the run. Brooking and Boley will be on the field most of time, when the Falcons play nickel.
The Falcons are deep at DT. Grady will help'm on run downs. The depth will help them hold up. DE Jamal Anderson is another key guy. His rookie year is much criticized because he did not have a sack, but he plays the run pretty good. Hopefully, the sacks will come soon.
More later.
