Bulldogs Start Practice
A happy day almost ruined. Coach Richt would normally be stoked about the first day of practice, but this year he spent most of his pre-practice time dealing with the latest round of suspensions and addressing it with the media.
No fun there. He told his coaches in an earlier meeting to coach and teach, and let him handle the headaches. Bet for a moment he missed being one of those assistants, instead of handing out the discipline. But that goes with the job.
Think maybe back in my day, that the upperclassmen did a better job of being on top of this stuff. We had some guys that would get dudes out of bad situations before they got nasty. Get him back to the dorm before he wakes up in jail, with his name in headlines.
The early reports on Matt Stafford are excellent. The guy is fit and taking charge. Addressed the team on Sunday in a meeting. The rally the troops talk. Here we are, let's go get it. Spent about twenty minutes with him doing a photo shoot for the AJC and noticed he's a solid 6'3"plus and 230. NFL scouts are going to love this guy this season. It's also obvious that he's got a real passion for the game. That will take him a long way.
Knowshon Moreno is another guy that has passion for football. And he has some chemistry with Matt. Here are two guys that understand you can work hard and have fun doing it. I like that. Moreno appears to be even thicker in the thighs. And tougher to tackle because of it. Their teammates seem to enjoy being around these two. They push each other and the team pushes too.
Thought it was funny that Richt couldn't wait to get on the field to see the freshman kicker, Blair Walsh. The 'Dogs need him to be the real deal. Fast. We will revisit this story soon.
Freshman receiver A.J. Green was given #8. Awesome number at Georgia. Stafford says he can run fast. He was some work to do to earn playing time at WR. Deep position, with a lot of experienced players. Maybe this new Richt philosophy of playing these young guys some will help him get on the field. A team can't have too many playmakers.
Asher Allen is ready to win. The 'Dogs top corner is also a return man. He's run back both kickoffs and punts, but Richt says he won't do both this season. Too big of a load. Asher will practice both, but they won't ask him to do both. Now is the time to work out some new faces. Richard Samuel is capable of running back kickoffs. Rashad Jones can bring back punts.
