'Dogs Lose Sturdivant

There will always be casualties in this game. Coaches know they have to go hard in the preseason to get'm ready and they hope that the top dogs don't go down hurt. But the reality is the best players are vulnerable to injury too.
Trinton Sturdivant was perhaps Georgia's top offensive lineman. He plays an important position at left tackle. And the big sophomore went down hard in the Bulldogs first scrimmage, protecting Stafford's backside on a pass play. His knee buckled. The offense watched in horror as trainers helped him from the field.
One frightening sight for his teammates. One big setback for the team.
O-Line coach Stacey Searels now has some important work to do before the season kicks off. He has got to find a way to replace Sturdivant. Not an easy thing to do.
Sophomore Josh Davis was backing up Trinton at left tackle. He finished up the scrimmage with the #1 offense. The big fella from Mississippi played in 8 games last season, in a mop up role. He appears to be a finesse type player. Not going to knock DL off the ball, but has good feet and can move around. Question is this: Is Josh Davis ready to handle to SEC's top pass rushers? Probably not.
Searels is examining several different scenarios beyond Josh Davis.
One likely move is to take one of his top guards and move them to tackle. Clint Boling started at right tackle for one game a year ago, before settling in at guard. He's the most athletic and experienced of the candidates. Vince Vance could move over from left guard, but I wonder how he could hold up versus those quick, athletic ends out on the edge. He ight be better served staying where he's at.
The Bulldogs top reserves line up at guard, so it makes sense to seriously consider moving Boling/Vance to left tackle. Tanner Strickland and Justin Anderson look ready to go now. Both are physical guys. Depth would allow the move to come from this position.
Another possible move could be moving right tackle Kiante Tripp over to the other side. He and Boling are high on athletic ability. Tripp has the skills to handle those demons on the other side of the ball. Searels could then ask one of the other tackle prospects to take over at the less challenging right tackle spot.
The last scenario would involve true freshman Cordy Glenn. The bruiser out of Westlake High is strong enough to hold his own and might be an option at right tackle. Glenn has already earned some respect during two-a-days. It might be time to throw a huge challenge his way. He'll get a look.
Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo will have to make some adjustments too. Look for a few more two tight-end sets to help the tackles out. Offer up some help, instead of asking them to go 1-on-1 a lot. Stay tuned.
