Can These 'Dogs Hunker Down?

Thought the 'Dogs Offensive staff made a smart move at left tackle, replacing injured Trinton Sturdivant with Kiante Tripp. There were some other choices, but this one made the most sense. Bobo and Searels went with the most talented player. Tripp---in his 3rd season at Georgia---is fit, athletic and has been impressive during camp. And he will get 17 practices to get comfortable on the left side. His time is now. The 'Dogs need him to play big.
Vince Vance has settled in at left guard, and the big man is more comfortable inside than out on the edge. Smart to keep him where he is at. The left side hasn't played much yet, but they look good getting off the bus.
Chris Davis has taken over the center spot. This guy is smart and dependable. Starting 13 games at guard last season as a freshmen tells you he should be okay in the middle. Ben Jones isn't quite ready.
On the right side, when Clint Boling returns, he is capable of playing guard or tackle. Freshman Cordy Glenn gets a look at right tackle. If he's not ready, Boling can handle the job. And that's probably the best case scenario, because there is some depth at guard, with Tanner Strickland and Justin Anderson pushing for playing time.
Some pundits might say that a tackle combo of Tripp and Boling is undersized. Forget that. Searels and Bobo will have these guys pulling on sweeps, knocking down linebackers and safeties. They will play to their strengths. Like having them out on the perimeter blocking on screens. These two are athletic. Good feet. Can maintain balance in pass protection. Push pass rushers around Stafford on the pocket.
Speaking of Stafford, the news is good. No better than good. Excellent news. The day I watched him at practice, Matt was making all the throws. The underneath and intermediate stuff was accurate. His deep ball has really improved since his rookie season. The guy is now the total package. And that includes taking a leadership role. He is set for a big season.
And the first big test is in Columbia. Williams-Brice Stadium will be electric. That Gamecocks defense will be tough. This Georgia offense will need to step up with a winning performance. They dropped the ball last year.
That loss was on the offense. They lost because a couple of receivers did not make the big catches, after earning playing time in camp.
During these two-a-day sessions, Stafford has had a lot of work with Harris, Troupe and Durham. Massaquoi has been slowed some, but he and Matt already have good chemistry. A.J. Green is really impressive. The kid has strong hands. If he gets his hands on the ball, he's bringing it down. Mark it down, he'll make some big plays this season as a freshman. But will he make one at South Carolina?
Chandler and Figgins are two solid tight-ends too. Stafford will lean on them.
And let's face it. This Georgia offense is about getting Moreno off early and often. His energy and competitive fire is worth 25-30 touches a game. Period. The Moreno threat then sets up some big plays off play-action. This offense should be fun to watch.
