Hit Vols With Hobnail Boot Early

Bet the Bulldogs are really annoyed with the motivational storyline this week. And that's probably not a bad thing. Last season against Tennessee, the Vols caught the 'Dogs with a 1st round right-left combination, which resulted in a standing 10-count and a 28-0 halftime lead. The last time out, Bama connected on an ugly uppercut blow that took the 'Dogs down to the canvas and on on their back early in the fight. The result: a 31-0 Tide lead at the half.

The lesson learned: Hit the opponent, before they hit you. Jump'm first. Take the lead. Play from the front. Show'm who's boss. Send a message upfront: This isn't going to be your day, pal. This is our house. Basically, get out to a fast start. Put it together in all 3 phases quickly.

And in my mind, it's not about Richt delivering a knock-down-the-door pre-game speech. It's about going out and executing the plan. There is no time at this point in the season to settle into the game. Or get comfortable. Each guy has got to cut it loose. Richt has a good staff. The plan will be good. And with two weeks to prepare, the plan is probably more diverse. That's normally a good thing too.

A fast start in this match-up is bigger than normal. The Vols are fragile. This team shows up at Sanford Stadium with a lot of doubts. The Bulldogs easiest path to victory would be to breakout that hobnail boot in the 1st quarter, instead of the 4th quarter (love ya, Larry).
