Jones Stays & 'Dogs Secondary in Good Shape.

Asher Allen bolted early. And then, Reshad Jones blindsided the Bulldog Nation by flirting with the early departure. Things were looking tough for DC Willie Martinez. Coach was expecting those two guys to come back and be veteran leaders and performers. Fortunately, Coach Richt got to Reshad and talked some sense into him.
Mix in seniors C.J. Byrd and Ramarcus Brown exiting and what DC Willie Martinez had scheduled was one busy spring practice. New faces ined up at both safety spots and looking for 2 new corners to pair with Prince MIller. That's stressful stuff. The new faces would all have been young pups too. Probably not a good formula.
Why the early exit for Asher Allen? He heard Tebow was coming back. Or maybe he thought it was time to play ball for a living. Anyway, on paper losing Asher Allen hurts the defense. Asher Allen will be missed. He competed. He got after it. He made plays. Probably a 3rd round guy in the draft, because of his build. A little undersized, but Tim Jennings made it. Tim Wansley got a good look. Asher will get one too.
Reshad Jones reminds me of Sean Jones. Great athlete. Can run and jump. Needs to work on his tackling. I wonder about his commitment and passion for the game. During bowl practice, I witnessed Richt getting on him constantly about hustling on and off the field. If he wants to make it in the NFL, he will have to get motivated. But he has the talent. Coming back gives him a shot to improve his draft standing. Become a better player. Polish up the skills.
The 2009 secondary looks like this: CB position is Prince Miller on one side and Brandon Boykin and Vance Cuff competing on the other side. One of those guys will be the nickel DB. Boykin looks to have some play-making ability. I wonder if Cuff has it. We'll find out this spring.Incoming freshman sensation Branden Smith will get a good look.
At safety, Jones will probably pair with John Knox . Or it might be time for Quinton Banks to step up. Baccari Rambo is a redshirt that has all the tools and look for him to push for the job opposite Reshad. Sanders Cummings, Nick Williams and Makiri Pugh are redshirt guys looking to make a move too. And Bryan Evans will be a senior who can play both corner and safety.
Reshad Jones did the right thing. He came back. And the 'Dogs are glad he did. Now, quit that block-down-tackling thing and start wrapping up in 2009.
