The Scouting Report on Stafford & Sanchez
Matt will be competing from this point on with Mark Sanchez. Over the next couple of months, these two young QBs will be grooming their total game, while the NFL teams break them down. Going into the process, most teams probably have Stafford with a slight edge on Sanchez. That's because Matt has played a lot more that Mark (39 games to 27 games/39 starts to 16 starts).
The Measureables on Stafford: 6'3 230+. Pro type body. Everyone wants to be 6'5", but 6'3" is legit. Sanchez: 6-3 225.
Arm Strength: Obviously, he's got a big arm. Can get it downfield on the intermediate to deep routes with tremendous zip. Pro scouts are impressed when they see him display the "staple NFL throws"...skinny post, deep out, square in, seam. Can stick it in tight places. Gets the ball downfield: averaged 14.7 yards per completion this season. Sanchez averaged 13 yards per completion,
Athleticism: Good to outstanding. Has good pocket presence. Shows good escapability. Sanchez probably has slight edge in ability to run around and throw it.
Leadership Skills: Can lead, but prefers to lead by example. Works hard and gets along with teammates. A competitor. Tough.
Sanchez has a more out-going personality. Speaks out more.
Weaknesses: Needs to develop more touch on some throws---example being INTC in Cap One Bowl, on underneath crossing route. Threw it too hard and ball bounced off WR for a pick. Has got to learn to take something off that throw. Also needs to develop more arch on the deep ball...allow the WR more of a chance to run under the ball. Throws deep ball on too much of a line. Needs to speak up more and become more of a communicator. Too laid back in practice. Sanchez just needs to quit getting injured in practice.
Not his fault, but an issue: Because of the youth on the OL at Georgia, the OC MIke Bobo limited the number of pro-style 5-7 step drop packages/opportunities. 'Dogs offense had to employ more quick pass and play-action pass. So, Matt needs more experience dropping back, reading coverage, making good decisions and being patient with his throws. There will be a learning curve because of this factor.
Maturity: Remains to be seen. Has real passion for the game. Is he ready to be a pro and leave the college lifestyle behind? Only time will tell. Matt and Mark both have faced some small adversity. Stafford's freshman season things didn't go well and he had to fight through it. Sanchez had to swallow his pride and watch for a while.
Matthew Stafford and his advisors need to stay far away from the Detroit Lions Organization. That's a no win. Blow the INTV. sabatoge the relationship. Tell'm you won't sign. Force a deal if they want you. Best fit might be #3 to Kansas City, where x-Pats personnel guy Scott Pioli takes over. Sanchez looks like a good fit for San Francisco at #10. Guess the Jets, Bucs or Vikings could make a move up to get him.
