'Canes To Go After Martinez?

Randy Shannon at Miami needs a Defensive Coordinator. And it looks like WIllie Martinez is a candidate for the job. It appears to be a good fit. Martinez played there. He continues to recruit the area for the Bulldogs. So he's got solid relationships already in place. He can hit the ground running. There is plenty of talent to coach up. And he would probably get a nice raise to make the move.
Bet Coach Richt would fight to keep him. And that thought probably makes a lot of the knucklehead Bulldog fans more than a little bit crazy. They want him gone. And Coach Martinez is aware of the criticism. He might look at this as a good career move.
The 'Canes could get him by offering a multi-year contract. Georgia won't. They don't do that. Wilie works on a 1-year contract, like the other assistants. Trot out that come on back home line and offer a 2-year, $500,000 deal...and Richt is probably losing a good man and trusted assistant.
Couple of thoughts...Richt would probably go to Damon Evans and plead his case for matching the Miami offer, but the guess here says Damon would not support it. Bad timing and the power of public opinion. The 'Dogs allowed 25 points per game and the fans noticed. Not a good time to get a bump in pay and another year added to the deal. One more thing; Richt is probably a little frustrated, knowing his people aren't taking good care of his assistants. Garner has got to fight for a raise every year. Georgia has deep pockets, when it comes to the football program. It would be money well spent---locking down key assistants. To me, it doesn't make good sense.
Right now, most all of these guys are content working at Georgia because they love working for Richt. Garner stays because of Richt. Searels stayed because of Richt. Bobo is here because of Richt. Not because Georgia is paying top dollar.
I believe Brian Van Gorder was the only Georgia assistant to ever have a multi-year contract. Erk should have had one. Cavan should have gotten one when he signed Lindsay and Herschel. But for some reason, Georgia has always been a little cheap with assistant salaries. That doesn't sit well with me. Those are the guys that need to be taken care of the most. Let's cut back on the next facilities upgrade and lock these dudes down.
Tennessee is doing it. So is Auburn. The 'Dogs and the Gators lag behind. Down at Florida, they are cheap too. Mullen just left to take the job at Mississippi State and he was working on 1-year deals. Charlie Strong has a 1-year contract too. What's up with that?

I would just be surprised (IF CWM is offered the DC position at Miami) if he took it. Shannon's place is not cemented in stone. CMR is very well established in Athens. Would Martinez jump ship just to get an extra year on a contract, then be forced to look for another job once Shannon is gone later this year?

The bigger issue may be your point Buck, why doesn't UGA give lengthier contracts to valuable assistants? And does that come back and bite us before we adjust that practice?

    This Dawg hopes so.

I could not agree more Buck. It is clear that Coach Richt really values continuity on his staff. I hope he doesn't let this impact his future decisions on his own contract. It boggles my mind that Rodney Garner can put in a decade+ at this university and has to work on a year to year basis.
