Bulldogs G-Day on ESPN & CSS Future
Here come the big shots. Move aside locals. ESPN is coming to Athens to broadcast the G-Day game. Guess the annual CSS broadcast is now out, after an 8-year run. Bummer. Matt Stewart and I really enjoyed working it.
So brace yourself for x-Gator Jesse Palmer, x-Buckeye Kirk Herbstreet and the rest of the gang to show up and wing it. Sit down for a quick meeting with Coach Richt on Friday. Get the rosters and take a quick note about most of the starters. Producers will have already put the story on replacing Stafford and Moreno in the can (TV term for a package already finished). They will plan a live INTV with Joe Cox and Caleb King. There will be the usual UGA mascot feature. Richt will join'm in the booth.
Then, during the scrimmage we'll hear more about how great the Gators are. And how Alabama is the team to beat in the West. Coach Corso will mix in some positive Spurrier/South Carolina talk. It'll be awesome.
Wait a minute. Hold on, now. You might want to actually come to G-Day, instead of listening to all that "rival love" at home. Matt Stewart and I will save you a seat. My advice: Record the ESPN coverage, and check it out later.
As I understant it, CSS might not be broadcasting the Georgia games this coming season. I hear the contract is up and SportSouth is trying to get their hands on the rights to broadcast the games on a tape-delay basis. My run could be over. But it's been fun. I've really enjoyed being apart of the coverage. In fact, it's been a passion. Many times the last 9 years, I've been driving to Tuscaloosa, Columbia, Knoxville, or Nashville and thought about how much I enjoyed covering Georgia football. More than once, I've thought about how I'm enjoying this so much more than say...landing a job with another network, and doing the color-analyst work for the Ole Miss- Arkansas game. Moving up doesn't appeal to me that much. Seeing the 'Dogs every Saturday was a pleasure.
It wasn't always easy...sometimes the parking pass was at the stadium waiting on me (logistically a nightmare), or our broadcast location was shoved on top of the press box without replay availability or live stats, and the travel wasn't easy, especially with my CF Today Show on 680 The Fan on Saturday morning...but I loved following and covering the 'Dogs. It was fun. I might have done it for free.
Don't know what the future holds. But I'll keep you posted. Better get to work on my Plan-B.

Hey Buck, that is awesome how you would rather do what you enjoy vs moving up. I think that is a good way to live life. Maybe you can move into booth with Bob Rathbun and call the games on sportsouth
