The Glamorous Super Bowl Experience
Parked the car and bumped into Joe Montana. Picked up my Super Bowl credential and talked with Doug Williams. Walked into radio row and saw Franco Harris and Phil Simms. Super Bowl week is glamorous, at least for a small town guy like me.
The Super Bowl host site always rolls out the red carpet. Police presence is everywhere. If feels safe. And don't you know all those A-list celebs from sports and entertainment like that. All the functions are at places like the Hyatt, Hilton, Ritz-Carlton or the Marriott Riverfront. At the Super Bowl, you tee it up at courses that have a name that begins with T-P-C. It's all good. As a member of the media, they even present you with a gift, when you arrive. Got a ink pin, with the Super Bowl 43 logo on it. Also got a Super Bowl lapel pin. And you got free gatorade, while it lasted.
On radio row, the place is buzzing. People working the room from every angle. Agree to mention that Montana is associated with Motorola, Marshall Faulk represents EA Sports, or Warrick Dunn will be at the Maxim Party, and they are willing to come on the show. Everyone is representing, or selling something. Doug Williams was ready to promote the Disney Sports Complex. Basically, you scratch our back and we'll scratch yours. Just play the game, pal. It's a win-win.
Matthew Stafford will be on the Buck & Kincade Show Friday. Live and in person. Forget exactly what he's representing. But I like his game. Sure hope Matt gets with Kansas City. Don't wish Detroit on him. You know Shanahan wants a big-time QB taking the snaps and Peoli knows there is not a QB on the Chiefs roster that can throw it like Stafford. Looks like a good fit. By the way, Ryan got $34M guaranteed going 3rd to the Falcons last year. Sweet.
Got some scoop on Carver-Columbus LB Jarvis Jones. Heard he's off to USC. And that's not South Carolina. Georgia and Florida wanted him bad. Sounds like he's getting away. How about that, getting recruiting news on Radio Row.
Bumped into Matt Ryan, as he worked the room. He's promised me some action out on the golf course. He's got the passion. Most of us do. This guy just loves to compete. And that's exactly what appeals to me. As a player, the competition is addictive. You love it when you are playing. And you miss it when its over. Out of the golf course, you can still taste that competition. Bring your A-game or break out the wallet. Come to think of it, Ryan's got some deep pockets. Better be careful.
Always loved that Lee Trevino story about how pressure to him was playing a $20 dollar nassau bet with $5 in his pocket. Not some Skins game, where you're playing for some sponsor's money.
Early wake-up call tomorrow and a full day on the scene. Sounds like fun.
