Griffey Turns Back on Braves
I understand why. Jr's best days in his HOF career were in Seattle. He gave'm more than a decade of some of the best baseball that's ever been played. And he did it clean. He's a hero in Seattle. And the hero is going back for one last curtain call. To be the DH. And to take a bow. A lot like the role Glavine will have in a Braves uniform this season. Glavine is signing, right?
Braves fans shouldn't be angry at Griffey. Disappointed, but not mad at the guy. Shouldn't feel used and abused.
The Mariners were expected to sign him all along. But then, Griffey reached out to Chipper. Then, Chipper got Wren involved. Wren made an offer similar to the one Seattle offered. Griffey reached out and the Braves jumped. What more could the Braves have done? Not much. Basically, Griffey, Jr. is close to the Mariners team President and Chariman from his earlier days. There is some loyalty there. These two guys are selling Ken on this: come on back and let us love on you. Hard to beat that, if you're Atlanta. After all, we were offering the guy a chance to be a platoon player.
That leaves Garrett Anderson or go internal. And internal is Blanco, or Shafer. And Norton.Or Infante.
What a bummer. It would have been fun to Have Griffey, Jr. around this season. He could have influenced prospect Jason Heyward
big time. Oh well. Griffey could have really helped against RH pitching. Diaz is just going to have to have a step up season. Just like Kotchman, Francoeur, and Josh Anderson.
The Braves are all about pitching and defense this season. I sure hope it works.
