G-Day Scrimmage Boring?
So, it was a little boring. That's the way my daughter described it. But she did like the Red Coat Band and the $9 ice cream that came in the Georgia helmet. Oh well, I learned a few things. Like Herbstreet had a 5:00 flight out of Atlanta and he got a little nervous, when Richt extended the 3rd and 4th quarters to 10:00, instead the of 8:00 clock played in the first half. The guess here says Nessler got him there in time.
On the field, there were some encouraging things going on, especially on defense.
Defense is the side of the ball the 'Dogs need to jump start in 2009. DE Justin Houston looks like he's now ready to make an impact . Maybe it was too early to think he would be a factor a year ago. Right now, he looks like a 10-sack guy. It's wait and see on the other side. CB Brandon Boykin is a player and will replace Asher Allen opposite Prince Miller.Boykin is really athletic. They even got him the ball on a reverse offensively. Sanders Cummings is a redshirt freshman corner that has some upside too. He's long. Got wingspan. And a playmaker. Another redshirt freshman, Bacarri Rambo will be a third safety and the future looks bright with him too. Dude is physical. Curran likes this guy's nasty streak.
Forget about Cox, Aaron Murray and A.J. Green for a minute. Defense is where it's at. As in, the defense has got to take a big jump up this year for the 'Dogs to be a real factor. in 2008, this defense only sacked the QB 24 times (8th in the SEC) and forced just 16 turnovers (dead last in the SEC). That's a big reason why they allowed 24.5 points a game (#10 in the SEC). These things have to change.
Houston, Boykin, Cummings and Rambo give them a chance, when you add them to a mix that includes a mean DT position group (Atkins, Owens, Weston, Tyson), a deep LB corp (Curran, Dent, Gamble, Washington, White, Dowtin), and a solid safety combination (Jones & Evans). Bryan has reinvented himself at safety. Pro scouts will be checking him out this season. Quit dwelling on him getting burned a few times at CB the last two years and give this guy a second look at a new position. He looks good.
Maybe the spring game was a little boring because the defense was out there making some plays. And they'll need to make a lot more this fall. Starting in the season opener at Oklahoma State.
Check back later for my take on the quarterbacks.
