Falcons Get Better on Defense

Out with the old guys, and in with the new, more athletic guys. The Falcons cut Lawyer Milloy and Grady Jackson loose and did not replace them in free agency. So, it was not a surprise to see them take a DT and a SS with their first two picks. Peria Jerry and William Moore both look like good fits in the Atlanta defense. Van Gorder's defense got quicker and more athletic with these two picks.
In the 1st Round, Dimitroff stayed at #24 and passed on OLB Clay Matthews and DT Evandor Hood. OT Michael Oher was off the board at #23, so OT wasn't a real option. They took DT Peria Jerry, who is a run stuffer that is a beast, when on the move on slants and stunts. He'll be 25 years old come kick-off, so he's a mature guy and he has had no character issues. The one thing that's not real impressive is his build. He looks a bit top-heavy and has one of those sloppy frames. But the fit looks good. Fact is, they needed to take a DT early and this is a guy they targeted.
Strong Safety was a must find too. William Moore is a 220-plus pound guy that will excell in the box playing the run. A physical dude. He will be comfortable playing zone in pass coverage. This guy is a good athlete, who has some ball skills. Another good fit to what the Falcons want the SS to do. Dimitroff passed on two solid players from Utah at this spot: OLB Paul Kruger and CB/Safety Sean Smith. The two top-rated safeties--Chung and Delmas--- were off the board at the start of the 2nd round.
Jerry and Moore will help boost this Falcons defense and that will happen in 2009. I expect both of these guys to be starters in year one. That's good impact. They wanted to get younger and more athletic and that's exactly what they did at DT and SS. This is a good start to the draft.
