Braves Moves Give Fans Hope
Give Frank Wren credit for making a tough decision on Tom Glavine. They observed him in those minor league rehab starts and determined his current stuff couldn't help them win. Especially, when they compared it to Tommy Hanson. Giving Glavine a few starts and a couple million dollars would have been the wrong move. Tom would probably gotten roughed up some against Major League hitters and the Hanson call-up would have happened then. Waiting would have only set the Braves back some more. Couldn't afford to go that direction. A tough decision had to be made, and Wren made it.
The Braves got better today. Hanson and McLouth give this team a boost. They look legit now.
The trade for McLouth is a steal. The Braves get an All-Star CF in his prime and gave up 3 minor league prospects. Why would the Pirates do that? Well, it opens up a spot for their top prospect Andrew McCutchen in the OF. Morton will have a shot to be in their rotation soon. Gorkys Hernandez reports to AA Altoona. Jeff Locke reports to High-A Lynchburg.
McLouth is a late bloomer. And the Braves love 4 things about Nate: 1- his compact swing projects out to 25+ homeruns and 115+ RBI, 2- his speed allows him to steal bases, 3- he won the Gold Glove in CF last season, and 4- he is signed to a new, long-term contract that's affordable (3 years/$15.75M, with a 4th year club option for $10.65).
This guy plays with intensity and passion. He's a team player. A quality guy. What's not to like? Plug this guy in and let's go play ball. The Pirates weren't shopping him, by the way...Wren just made them an offer they couldn't refuse. Nate McLouth looks like a perfect fit for the Braves. Gives them things they did not have...an outfielder who has some pop and a guy that can steal. The team guy tag is big with the Braves too.
Glavine was given the option of retiring a Braves, but Tom wanted his release, so he could go give it a shot elsewhere. Don't blame him for that. He had gotten so close to coming back.
See you at the ballpark!
