SEC Media Days
Back in Birmingham, for the 22nd annual SEC Media Days. Joined by over 300 writers, 30 radio stations, and all the usual TV brands (ESPN, CBS, CSS, Fox Sports Net). Plus, all the local affiliates. The Winfrey Hotel is swarming with producers trying to nail down interviews with the SEC Head Coaches and the two players each school brought along to represent.
Day #1 was sort of laid back. Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Kentucky and MIssissippi State took the stage. Bobby Johnson and Rich Brooks are really impressive guys. They know how to work the scene and be comfortable with it. Both have done wonderful jobs. Petrino hates these things. He does the minimum and he's normally out of here quick. Dan Mullen is an interesting case study at MSU. Needs to find a QB quick. He also handles the media part of the job smoothly.
Big day tomorrow. Saban, Richt, Meyer and Nutt show up. Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Arkansas are in the spotlight. Then, Miles, Kiffin, Spurrier and Chizik show up Friday. Busy couple of days obviously. But it's fun to be on the scene and checking things out. Like today...Vanderbilt CB Myron Lewis is an impressive young man. Legit 6'3" Sharp looking suit with suspenders. And he's focused on his senior season. NFL scouts have him slotted heading into the season as an early 2nd round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. Lewis is capable of matching up physically against those big WRs like A.J. Green and Julio Jones. Love the fact that he's totally into his senior season. It means everything to him. I've rated Myron #29 in my Top 30 College Football Players list.
I'm convinced that there are 5 teams capable of winning an SEC Title in 2009. Florida. LSU. Alabama. Ole MIss and Georgia. And in that order. My Darkhorse would be Tennessee or South Carolina. More tomorrow.
