'Dogs Hit the Practice Field/Media Day
Richt looks rested and ready to go full speed ahead. Clint Boling and Rennie Curran are ready to hit somebody. Geno Atkins and Jeff Owens are ready to mix it up. Joe Cox was all smiles. And why not, the O-Line looks legit for the first time in a few years, and A.J. Green is lining up wide. There are a few reasons to be fired up.
Media Day was sort of laid back. No controversial off-the-field stories. No Preseason #1 ranking. No highly publicized players. The most exciting thing to happen was what appeared to be two Georgia Tech students riding by and hollaring out, "45-42, 45-42." And Chip Towers dropped his lunch tray, which made a loud noise. The message was good: Tougher and Totally Focused! I like that.
Here is what needs to happen during two-a-day practices: the O-Line survives the Searels Camp (Boling, Sturdivant, Vance, Glenn and Jones, and Anderson don't get hurt), Richt is determined to run the ball. This group looks ready to rumble. And that brings us to this...Now is the time for Caleb King to emerge as the next outstanding Georgia RB. Knowshon's moved on. Herschel, Thomas Brown, Terrell Davis, Garrison Hearst, Robert Edwards and Musa Smith are watching. Caleb has been groomed for this opportunity. It's his 3rd year in the program and he showed flashes of being special playing in every game last season. It's Caleb King time. He got 4.5 yards a carry last season and that number would work this season too. Caleb is a slasher. Caleb is elusive. Give him the ball.
Cox will complete more than 61% of his passes. That would be a better rate than Stafford last season. Joe is a really accurate passer in the short to intermediate routes. A.J. is a star. Michael Moore makes plays out of the slot. Who is that 3rd WR? No worries. Too much talent here for someone not to step up. King, Troupe, Marlon Brown? With Figgins suspended, Aron White is the starter at TE. Anxious to see how he's progressed. Mainly a receiver last season...wonder if he can block?
Defensively, DT, LB and Safety are strong position groups. A few players have to emerge at DE and CB. At DE Battle and Dobbs are capable, veteran players. Houston will be good when he comes back. Tripp will get a good look. And so will 2 pups, Cornelius Washington and Montez Robinson. Need to find out who can play big quick, before that trip to Stillwater. At CB, Prince Miller is a good player. Soph. Brandon Boykin looks like a player too. And I like RF Sanders Cummings. If Cuff stepped up that would help. And super freshman Branden Smith gets a look. Young talent at CB, but highly skilled.
Tougher and Totally Focused!
That's the theme as Georgia football gets started in 2009. I'm buying in.
