Bulldogs Need'm Both!
Richard Samuel ran wild in the 'Dogs first scrimmage. The downhill runner from Cartersville/Cass HS got 5 carries and went over a hundred yards...busted one for 63 and a touch. He also had a catch and run for 70 and a TD. Impressive stuff. Keep this up and Samuel will win the starting RB job. And if that's the situation, he's still going to need some help carrying the load.
No reason to get down on Caleb King. So, it was Richard's Day. The next scrimmage might be Caleb's time to shine. Or maybe Caleb is a gameday kind of RB...elevates his game on Saturday. Herschel was like that. Anyway.
The real deal is this: The 'Dogs will need both of these guys to have a good offense. SEC games are tough and physical. The RB takes a beating most Saturday's. A combination of Samuel and King is the best cast scenario. Last season, the RB position got 338 carries. Knowshon got 73% of those totes. Richard and Caleb split the other 27% of the carries. So, a first round talent max'd out with 73% of the load. Got to figure Samuel might be 50-60% if this keeps up and Caleb gets in there enough to grad 30-40% of the load. There are plenty of carries to go around.
I like Samuel's skill set. Tough, hard-nosed. He runs downhill, almost looking for contact. He can pass protect. And he's not a fumbler. As it turns out, Richard also has some big-play ability.
Caleb is a slasher. An elusive runner. Can accelerate quickly.
This is a good combination of talents...add it up and the 'Dogs have two really good RBs.
