Critics Unfair to Joe Cox
Joe Cox didn't play bad against Oklahoma State. And the circulating comment that Joe's "the second coming of Teresinski" is a cheap shot at both guys. Some people just feel good criticizing others, and most of them never took a snap or understand a good throw from a bad one. It's a simple as that.
The stat sheet says Joe Cox was 15-30-162 yards, with a TD, an interception, and a fumble. He and his coach Mike Bobo are taking heat because the 'Dogs lost, and the offense scored 3 points, after that game-opening 10-play, 80-yard TD drive. It's the QB and play-callers fault, right? It goes way deeper than that.
So, what happened the rest of the way? Why just 3 points? Was it because Bobo went away from Samuel? Or did Joe just stink?
Bobo continued to hand the ball to Samuel, after that first drive. Two carries on the following drive. Another in the 3rd po. Four totes in the 4th possession, and on 3/8 he had the edge for a big gain but stumbled. To start the 3rd quarter, Bobo calls his number 4 times in the next drive, when they got the long FG. The next drive ended the 3rd quarter and Samuel got it four times in a row. Down in the 4th quarter, Bobo had to throw it.
Joe hit a big-play on 3rd down of the game-opening TD drive...A.J. Green got a clean release, as the CB missed the jam, and Joe hit him in stride for a 29 yard gain. Green couldn't make the catch with tight coverage from Perish Cox on a fade, the play before Moore's TD catch. 1st Drive: Joe made 3 good throws.
Late in the 1Q on 3/12 he tried to stick one to Moore into a tight window and the ILB broke it up. Stafford completes that one.
To start the 3Q, he hit Aaron White with a nice throw working the middle on 3/5. Same drive Bobo takes a play-action shot deep to Green and he just didn't make the play. Not Joe's fault. Next series, 3/5 Orson Charles drops a catchable ball. Joe had it on the money.
To start the 4Q, in what was probably the biggest play of the game, Joe gets sacked and fumbles. OSU knocks it in for a TD and takes a 24-10 lead. Joe stinks, right? Well, no. Ben Jones missed picking up a stunt...block the guy and Joe doesn't get hit or fumble. The interception late was the result of Tav King deflecting the ball up.
I guess it's just easy to blame it on the QB and play-caller, when your team loses. Even though it's not accurate.
