Dogs Style of Play on Offense
How would you describe the Bulldog offense? Pro-style? Physical? Finesse? I just put it on the tee for you folks looking to bust Bobo's chops, or criticize Cox. You would describe them as "unsuccessful" or "disappointing." Well, as you get into the season an offense begins to develop a certain style of play. Coaches---after a game or two---can see what's effective and what's not. And then, the offense typically settles into that style for the rest of the season.
What's the so-called "bread and butter" for this offense?
Still believe this can be an effective "run first" offense, but for that to happen Caleb King needs to make an impact at RB. Richard Samuel was impressive in his debue, but he needs some help. The 'Dogs need a talented 1-2 punch and their was big drop-off from Samuel to Carlton Thomas in Oklahoma. We'll know more about this Saturday. Caleb is expected to get his first playing time against Carolina. The style is pretty obvious...pound'm with Samuel, and let Caleb take advantage of some tired legs, when he gets in there.
One problem as I see it: The tight-ends are young and not real physical. So, Bobo would like to spread the field some and run it, but there are really two dependable WRs (Green & Moore). The biggest weakness with this Georgia offense right now is TE & #3 WR. The hope is that puppies grow up to be big 'Dogs in a hurry. Aaron White, Orson Charles, Arthur Lynch, Tavarres King, and Marlon Brown need to emerge quickly.
Maybe the home crowd at Sanford Stadium will be more comfortable that that crazy crowd at Boone Pickins Stadium.
And one thing on Joe Cox. He can read coverage and get the ball out on time. But when things break down, when the other 10 guys aren't sharp...Joe is not a run around and create type of guy. To me, he's a timing based, west coast type QB. Quick pass guy. Five step drop, read coverage, get the ball to the proper area kind of guy. Work the short to intermediate kind of QB. These young guys hurt him by not making plays in the opener.
Go with Logan Gray or Aaron Murray and you'd see more mistakes (turnovers) and probably a drop-off in the running game, because of Joe's ability to audible to the right play.
