Reasons NOT to Fire Martinez

Allow me to try this from the opposite point of view. Beginning with the fact that Coach Martinez has actually performed at a higher level than the AJC's Mark Bradley over the last year (Vick to Vikings, Dwyer 7 Heisman, GT to win ACC, Louisville to win hoops title, Fire Mike Woodson 4 times, Falcons draft Ziggy Hood, Richt more annoying than Spurrier, Fire Bobby Cox & Hire Brad Mills, Move GA-FL game To Georgia Dome).
Here are some reasons NOT to Fire Coach Martinez:
1- Wait and see what this defense does when they are not put on a short field 3-4 times in a game.
2- He's one of their best recruiters and works South Florida.
3- He's a good teacher (Tim Jennings, Paul Oliver, Thomas Davis, Sean Jones, Asher Allen all in NFL)
4- He's a trusted and loyal assistant to Coach Richt.
5- Never let the lunatic fringe fans dictate who's on your coaching staff.

Willie pulled it together in the bowl game last year and stopped Michigan State. they were held to 12 points even through we had a tough year with defense last year. I think our problem on defense starts with the line. our defensive line has had problems with rushing QB's who move around. our defensive ends can not shed a block. I
think Gardner is a great coach according to past players. but for some
reason Georgia is in a slump on the defensive line. we can not get after people. without that defensive line crashing into plays we will continue to give up points and lot's of them. we need a lineman to step up and now.

Buck, Thanks for the reality check. CWM is indeed afine teacher and great at bringing in the talent. Like you said , wait till the D is not protecting a short field. And by the way , am I the only one that sees a MONSTER future for the DOGS?

1st of all, GREAT win on Sat. night in Arky! Our boys in Red & Black, especially Joe Cox, showed tremendous poise, desire, passion, and determination in securing an extremely hard fought win!

Per my opening lines above, I tend to be a hopelessly optimistic Dawg fan and tend to look at the bright side of things but after reading wlayton's "Great Article on CWM" thread, like most of you, I felt sickened. In fact, it struck me to the point that I decided to conduct a little bit of my own research. What I found confirmed my worse fears and if yall care to read further, here are some more depressing stats regarding our rapid decline on the defensive side of the football under CWM:

Martinez' 2005 Georgia defense finished 8th in the country in scoring defense (16.4 ppg)

Martinez' 2006 Georgia scoring defense (17.6 ppg) AND was ranked 8th nationally in total defense, 5th in PASS defense and 1st in the SEC in third down efficiency.

Martinez' 2007 Georgia scoring defense (20.2 ppg)

Martinez' 2008 Georgia scoring defense (24.5 ppg)

Martinez' 2009 Georgia scoring defense, thus far (34 ppg)

Me being but one small and powerless member of Bulldog Nation I have NEVER publicly called for CWM's head (to this date) BUT the SAD thing is, thinking back to dapolla's post regarding "OUR AMAZING TALENT", even IF our defensive talent isn't up to the usual UGA standards both THIS year and LAST year, the stats above show an alarming trend. FACT of the matter is, ever since CWM took over as DC our scoring defense has gotten progressively worse.

Yes, defensive p‍layer‍s have come and gone since the end of the 2004, but the one thing that has remained a constant is DC CWM. Maybe, just maybe we had much better p‍layer‍s on defense in 2005 and EVERY year since then our defensive talent level has regressed?

Still, it would only seem resonable to conclude that our 2005 defensive p‍layer‍s actually REMEMBERED the coaching they received under the previous DC and many of those same p‍layer‍s remained in 2006. A handful of these p‍layer‍s still remained in 2007 but come 2008 and definitely by this year (2009), we've got NOTHING but defensive p‍layer‍s who have only known one DC in their entire collegiate careers.

Now, as much as I hate to credit the Gators or Vols for anything, to help make my point, I feel that I must. Hopefully yall do remember that Florida's pass defense was absolutely atrocious in 2007? If you don't trust me, they STUNK to the high heavens. However, with some obviously GOOD coaching and a year's experience, these exact same p‍layer‍s who couldn't cover my grandmother in 2007 became world beaters and Nt'l Champs in 2008.
How bout the Tennessee defense btw. 2008 and this 2009 season? Like UF from 07' to 08' they too have many of the same p‍layer‍s on this years' defense as last years', but unlike Florida, their DC actually changed during the offseason. Fact of the matter remains, th

We have seen what his defense can do and more often than not it is horrible. Do you remeber how it felt to see dozens of Techies cleaning their teeth with our hedges?

    let's review them 1 by 1

1- Wait and see what this defense does when they are not put on a short field 3-4 times in a game.

YES BUCK, KEEP WAITING. THE DAWGS BEGAN SLIDING LAST YEAR BUT RICHT WANTED TO "WAIT IT OUT". A CRUMMY SOUTH CAROLINA HUNG AN INSANE # ON THE DAWGS AND SO DID ARKANSAS, BUT DONT LET THE EVIDENCE GET IN THE WAY OF YOUR OPINION, JUST WAIT. NO REASON TO THINK FLORIDA, AUBURN OR GT WOULD SCORE A BUNCH ON YOU GUYS...AGAIN. JUST WAIT. I THINK ANOTHER 5 YEARS IS A GOOD TIMEFRAME TO WAIT.

2- He's one of their best recruiters and works South Florida.

HE IS A GOOD RECRUITER BECAUSE HE WORKS FOR UGA. YOU THINK THESE KIDS COME TO UGA BECAUSE OF THAT TACO-HEAD? GIMME A BREAK. THEY COME IN SPITE OF HIM.

3- He's a good teacher (Tim Jennings, Paul Oliver, Thomas Davis, Sean Jones, Asher Allen all in NFL)

OH NOW I SEE. WILLIE IS THE REASON THEY ARE GOOD, NOT THEIR TALENT. YOU PROBABLY THINK THIS BECAUSE YOU WORK AT THE SAME RADIO STATION AS LEO MAZZONE (THE GUY WHO MADE GLAVINE, SMOLTZ AND MADDUXE THE PITCHERS THEY ARE. YESSIR, OLD LEO COACHED THEM UP INTO HOF PITCHERS. HE DESERVES ALL THE CREDIT. I AM STILL SHOCKED HOW CRUMMY THE ORIOLES PITCHERS WERE WHEN LEO COACHED THEM. EVEN MORE AMAZING THAT NO ONE IN BASEBALL EVER HIRED LEO AGAIN. YESSIREEE, WILLIE IS A GREAT TEACHER OF DEFENSE. I WONDER WHY WITH ALL THIS "NFL TALENT" HE HAS CREATED HE CANNOT KEEP HIS OPPONENTS UNDER 40 POINTS A GAME??

4- He's a trusted and loyal assistant to Coach Richt.

THAT IS A PERFECT REASON TO NOT HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE. BECAUSE HE IS PALS WITH THE COACH. COME TO UGA AND JOIN THE TRADITION OF WORKING WITH A BUNCH OF COACHES WHO ARE PALS. DONT WORRY ABOUT WINNING AND THE ACTUAL GAME ON THE FIELD. WATCH THE COACHES MAKEOUT WITH EACH OTHER AFTER EVERY PRACTICE. GO DAWGS, SIC EM! WOOF WOOF WOOF!

5- Never let the lunatic fringe fans dictate who's on your coaching staff.

YES, WHY LET FANS DECIDED WITH FEWER IN ATTENDANCE AND FEWER DONATIONS. WE DONT WORK FOR YOU, FANS. WE ARE THE FRIENDLIEST COACHES IN THE SEC AND YOU DONT NEED TO DEMAND RESULTS FROM US. WE MAKE A COMBINED 4.8 MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR. YOU DUMB FANS NEED TO OBEY BUCK BELUE AND NOT CHALLENGE US NOR QUESTION THE "RESULTS ON THE FIELD.
