Vols Terrible on 3rd Down

Lane Kiffin's Vols offense is struggling. The passing game is terrible. All they can do is run it. But even that plan has presented some real problems. Down & distance is not often talked about, but it's the determining factor is how efficient an offense can be. Got to stay on schedule: gain 3-4 yards on 1st down, gain another 3-4 yards on 2nd down...that sets up manageable 3rd down situations.
Bad or negative plays kill an offense. That creates a lot of 3rd and long situations.
That's what is going on with Lane's offense right now. Check out the numbers against Florida: 3/6+ Nine times. 3/4-5 twice. 3/3 or less twice. Against Auburn: 3/6+ 13 times, 3/4-5 once, 3/3 or less twice.
Combine those two games and the Vols offense has been in 3rd and long situations 76% of the time. And they have no confidence in the passing game with Crompton throwing it. No wonder these guys are struggling. Those numbers get you beat. Coach Martinez hopes this trend continues, because is puts Tennessee is obvious passing situations on 3rd down. Turn up the pressure and get them off the field.
