Shots At Joe Cox?
Hearing a lot of talk about Joe Cox playing poorly against Kentucky. And I wonder if I saw the same game as some of these people. Cox didn't play bad. Joe was out there cutting it loose. I guess a lot of people just remember how it ended.
And I just cringe when I hear this one: "Joe was staring down receivers."
Kentucky was playing a lot of man coverage in the secondary. In man, the DBs aren't looking at the QB...they are focused on their receiver. That's a lesson out of QB 101. If the DB is looking at me (the Q
, it's zone. If he's looking at the receiver, it's man coverage. So, if they are in zone, I need to look off the safety or LB. If they are in man, no need to play that game. Anyway.
Joe Cox is the 33rd rated QB in College Football. That's better than McElroy, Jefferson, Crompton, Thad Lewis, Reesing, Stanzi, Jevan Snead, and Stephen Garcia. His 21 TD passes is in the same rare air as Zeier, Greene, Shockley and Stafford. Dude is not just checking it down either. Joe's averaging 14.5 yards per completion. Get off Joe's back, man.
Yeah, but Belue he was like 12-30 against Kentucky. Well dude, the plan was to take shots down the field off play-action. Low percentage stuff, even though Joe hit Tav King in stride a couple of times for big plays. I thought the 'Cats coverage was pretty tight most of the time.
As far as the 2 interceptions go...they hurt obviously. The screen pass INTC I understand what happened...there is a lot of trash around those RB screens and sometimes those DTs can rise up after you've committed to throwing the ball. The 2nd INTC was the LB making a play on the RB running an angle route...the 'Dogs had hurt them on that 3-4 times and this time the LB anticipated and jumped the route. Cox threw it to a spot and the LB got there first.
Did Joe play great. No. Did Joe stink up the joint like some guys are saying? No. It was somewhere in between. Should Richt have told Bobo to get Murray or Mettenberger in the game? Absolutely not.
