Braves Ready to Fly North
The Braves varsity looked strong again today, in Bradenton against the Pirates. Kawakami was impressive. Good command of the fastball to get ahead in the count and he mixed in a slow curve that gave'm fits. In the last 3 games, Hanson, Hudson and Kawakami have allowed 2 runs in 17 innings. Impressive work out of those 3.
McLouth appears to be shaking out of his spring slump. Hit a solo HR to lead off the game against his old 'mates today. Took an outside fastball deep, opposite field. This funk really dates back to the end of last season, when he hit .164 in his last 70 at bats. Still a little time left to get it together. Roughly about 10 games and 30 at bats, before they start counting for real. He needs a few balls to fall in and a little confidence. Otherwise, Cabrera might start the season in center and lead-off.
Both Jesse Chavez and Manny Acosta struggled today against the Pirates Junior Varsity (the minor leaguers). Chavez faced 8 batters and gave up 6 hits and a walk. His era is now 16.50. Acosta got tagged with the loss, after an unimpressive 1.2 innings, which included 3 walks. These two are on the bubble, and it's about to burst.
Venters, Reyes and Kimbrel are in the hunt for the those final two spots. Proctor doesn't look ready yet.
Heyward crushed another pitch today. They tossed the ball out of play...believe the stuffing was coming through the busted stitching. What will his number be? Not sure. Vendors outside the stadium (Atlanta based) want to stock up on the Heyward jerseys to sell during the season opening series against the Cubs. Told them to forget the number and just put his name on the back. Put the number on later.
The Pirates ballpark in Bradenton has been in play for 42 years now. A real throw-back. The inspiration was Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Compact feel, with the fans close to the field. Maz, Clemente, Stargel, and Parker all roamed around here back in the day. Palm trees sway beyond the outfield fence. Nice day at the ballpark.
