OL Banged Up, Defense Dominates.
Saturday's scrimmage featured the defense getting the best of the offense. And that's a good thing. The defense should be a little ahead of the offense right now. Those guys on that side of the ball are flying around and playing fast. The offense has to react to all that, and this early in camp it's not easy to do. Especially when the O-Line has 3 new faces int here.
Center Ben Jones got his knee scoped and hopes to be back by South Carolina. I think that's smart. Get that loose cartilage cleaned out, so it won't be flaring up during the season. It also gets back-up Chris Burnette some experience with the #1 Offense. So, this doesn't sound like a big deal. Cordy Glenn is down with mono. Tanner Strickland is getting his snaps. It'll also be good to see if Strickland is capable of helping, while Glenn is out. Josh Davis has an ankle issue, so A.J. Harmon gets a look in the meantime. But Trinton Sturdivant is probably the answer, if Josh can't go.
Searels has a deep position group. Finally!
Grantham got Justin Houston going quick. He had 3 sacks and a fumble recovery for a TD. This is the kind of impact the 'Dogs need from Houston. He's got to be a difference-maker. Gamble and Hebron made a bunch of plays too. And up front, Kwame Geathers made some noise. His impact is critical too. This is all good news.
Murray was 8-20. Expect to see some similar numbers early in the season, while Bobo is cranking up the run game and taking some of the pressure off the young QB. Trust me when I tell you that: 8-20 isn't bad when you are hitting some big plays off play-action. This isn't a season where Bobo is going to ask him to throw it 30 times a game and lead the way with the passing game. So don't start freaking out on Murray.
