Invitation to 1980 Championship Season
My plan this season is to look back week-by-week, game-by-game. You may have noticed on the host page. Click on the icon and I'll take you on that magic carpet ride that was 1980. Hope you enjoy it.
The season opener was at Tennessee. Just examined the game tape a few days ago and took some notes. Surprised with how many 'Dog fans were at Neyland Stadium that night, because I didn't think the Volunteers would allow that to happen. That grand old stadium underwent an expansion that off-season, and that night the crowd set a new southern record.
This was Herschel Walker's debue. He got on the field with 4:00 left in the 2nd quarter. As legend tells it, Herschel won that game for us with two 2nd half TD runs, but that's not exactly how it went. Both of those touchdown runs were beautifully blocked. Joe Happe made a huge play on a punt coverage play. LB Nate Taylor delivered a game-saving hit. Jimmy Payne and Eddie Weaver were almost unblockable. Chris Welton blitzed 4 plays in a row at the end and helped ruin the Vols drive.
It really was a team win. Erk's defense was awesome all season and did the job in this one.
Anyway, it'll be a glimpse inside that magical season. Remember? We didn't lose a game.
