What To Look For Against Cajuns
Expect Bobo and Grantham to reveal about 25% of what they plan to do this season against the Ragin' Cajuns. No need to provide Spurrier and the Gamecocks with too much information going into next weeks showdown in Columbia. But here are some things to look for at Sanford Stadium Saturday.
On offense you'll be focused on Aaron Murray obviously, but try to focus on the tight ends a few plays. Coach Bobo will be going with some 2-TE sets this season, because of the quality depth. Watch Bruce Figgins and Arthur Lynch as a blockers. It's like lining up with 7 OL. That's going to help the 'Dogs run the ball against the tough defenses. Orson Charles and Aron White are the pass-catching TEs, but Coach Bobo will have to call some running plays when they are in there, so it alters the tendencies and makes it tougher for the defense to determine what the play is going to be.
I'm anxious to examine the WR group too. Green is the real deal, but who else can make plays? Marlon Brown is reportedly come on strong and I want to see where he's at, as far as route running goes. If Marlon can make an impact this season that would be huge for the offense. Wooten needs to be a playmaker, if the offense is going to be dynamic throwing the ball. He's a quick, shifty threat working out of the slot. Logan Gray could assume that role too, when he gets healthy.
On defense, I don't expect to see much of Grantham's nickel package, so look at the LBs blitzing out of the base 3-4. Right now, they have strength in numbers, but a few of these guys need to step forward to claim most of the reps. Who are they? We'll begin to find that out on Saturday. Grantham needs at least 6 to play ball.
Also focus on the nose position. That's a key spot. See how Justin Anderson and Kwame Geathers perform. Tyson will start, but again, best case scenario he ends up at DE.
The return game looks dangerous on special teams. Boykin, Smith and Thomas can shake tacklers and take it to the house. A good time to start would be Saturday.
