Gamecocks Dominate In Opener

The head ball coach isn't back to talking smack, but he's feeling better than he did last year at this time.  Last season, they opened with a boring 7-3 win over N.C State. This time around they lit up the scoreboard, in blowout fashion. Tonight, they looked improved on both sides of the ball.
Offensively, they started the game with some negative plays, but where able to get it together against a S. Miss defense that isn't very good. As I mentioned yesterday, Spurrier turned the the running game and it paid off. Freshman RB Marcus Lattimore made a real impact, with 2 red zone TD runs. He looks like a weapon in the passing game too. Carolina rushed for 143 yards in the 1st half and finished with 237. One thing that makes it a tough match-up is that they run it effectively out of their base offense (2 RB, TE & 2 WR) and when they spread the field with 3-4 WR. In fact, they have a match-up edge in the spread set because Jeffrey, Gurley and Barnes are big WR who can block.
I thought Freshman QB Conner Shaw showed enough to take snaps away from Garcia. Even though he's a true freshman, Connor looks more comfortable that Garcia. And it's obvious both of these dudes like to tuck it and run. The passing game consisted of underneath crossing routes and WR screens. Not a lot of down the field shots.
It was difficult to pass judgement on the South Carolina defense. S. MIss threw it 57 times. Georgia's offense will attack with the running game. Gamecock DC Ellis Johnson will need to tighten it up on 3rd down...Golden Eagles were 10-19. But they forced 2 TOs and one came the first time they were on the field.
First impression tells me Georgia will be able to run it on them. S. Miss didn't even try.
