Bulldogs Impressive In Opener
Try to remember this was against Louisiana-Lafayette. But it certainly was an impressive start to the season. Seeing 55 points on the scoreboard is always a good feeling. Yet I keep thinking about Grantham's defense.
GATA is back in the Georgia defense. These guys Hunkered Down. Pressured the QB. Forced some turnovers. Were tough against the run. Got off the field on 3rd down (they were 3-16). The Ragin' Cajuns only got on the board once, when an over-agressive Rambo got beat deep on a double-move. And did you see Grantham barkin' when they came off the field? He was intense, man. You can see that when he's signals in the defensive calls. I really like the way he mixed up coverage...zone one play, tight man the next.
The corners looked good. Boykin, Branden Smith, and Cuff all made plays. Sanders Commings made the play of the game on his interception. This is encouraging. Jakar Hamilton made plays at saety. At LB, Dent had 6 tackles and a sack. Rambo had 6 tackles too. Houston had a few pressures. Grantham got every defensive player in the game. And this side of the ball stole the show from the new QB and the offense.
Aaron Murray should be proud of his first start. He played winning football. As I mentioned before, I started liking this guy, when he told Urban Meyer to give it up, he was going to play for the 'Dogs. Coach Bobo did a nice job play-calling. He had Aaron spreading the ball around to the playmakers: Branden Smith, Kris Durham, Caleb King, Orson Charles, Carlton Thomas, Marlon Brown and Logan Gray all got to touch it.
Murray can avoid pressure and make good things happen. I love it when the QB can run around and turn negative plays into to positive gains. That drives a defense nuts. That TD run was impressive. And he threw a couple of nice deep balls. But his proudest moment was checking off at the LOS on 3rd and goal, and calling the fade stop for Durham...TD! Thought Hutson Mason was good getting his first P.T.
The only disappointing thing to me was the offensive line run-blocking. Pass Protection was solid. But they didn't open up a lot of running lanes for Caleb. But this was a performance to feel good about and build on.
