Here Comes The Hogs!
Bobby Petrino and Ryan Mallett hit Athens on Friday, with the Razorbacks ranked #12. That's a bit high in my opinion. Maybe the 'Dogs can bring them back down to earth. After all, these guys haven't played anyone yet. They beat Tennesee Tech and Louisiana-Monroe on home turf, by a combined score of 75-10. Last season in enemy territory, Ryan Mallett wasn't so impressive. But Petrino is on record as saying the expectations are to compete for the SEC title.
Good news and bad news for Grantham's defense. The Hogs don't have a Lattimore type at RB, but Mallett is the best passing QB in CF. And he's got some weapons. Ryan Mallett has stated that "no one can cover WR Greg Childs man-to-man." The Hogs TE D.J. Williams is on the NFL radar. And slot WR Joe Adams is a playmaker too.
The key in this game: Pressure on Mallett. Under Martinez last season, there was little QBP and Mallett threw for 400 yards and 5 TDs. 'Dogs got 2 sacks. Grantham will turn up the heat. It'll be critical to get some quick pressure, which typically comes inside, with LBs blitzing, after DL engage with the OL.
Joe Cox rescued the 'Dogs in that game, by slicing up the Hogs secondary. However, this time around there is no A.J. Green to shred them. And it doesn't appear as though Tav King or Marlon Brown are ready to step up with big plays. Where will the big plays come from? Obviously, it's critical to score some points. Who are the playmakers, outside of Green? Better get that figured out quick. Brandon Smith will have his hands full covering those guys on defense, so finding him touches on offense will be tough.
The winning formula looks to be long, 10-plus play drives. Getting that run game cranked up. And letting Murray take some shots deep.
It's step up in competition for Arkansas. And they enter a hostile enviroment. The Georgia fans are going to show up big Saturday, right?
