Gators Hit Field In Jax Struggling
Some had the Gators winning their 3rd national title in 5 years, prior to the season starting. Not me. I had them taking a big step back. Why? Because of the transition on both sides of the ball. New defensive staff, with new players. New QB, whose style didn't fit the offense. No "Go To" WR. No legitimate RB. All these things made me believe that this Florida team wasn't going to contend for a title.
The Fightin Gators have lost 3 in a row, for the first time since 1988. Could they get all the issues straightened out during the off week? No. Will they play better than they did against Mississippi State? Yes. Could they beat Georgia Saturday? Yes. Will they? The guess says no.
Offensively, this Gator team is scaring no one, not even Georgia, who has really struggled to slow them down recently. Brantley really doesn't fit their scheme. He's a pocket passer in a scheme that wants to run the QB. None of the WRs have stepped up. And the RB position is a weakness. And that the biggest issue. The Gators OL is big and physical. They should be running the ball this season, but they don't have a RB who can carry the load. Demps foot problem has held him back and I don't believe it will hold up in this game. He'll give it a go. But the first time he gets hit and dragged to the ground, the foot will start barking. Moody and Gillislee have been average and banged up. Now it appears that Rainey will get a shot at RB. The most he has carried it is 12 times in a game.
Grantham's Plan: Pressure Brantley & Hunker Down against Trey Burton, when he takes the snap. The Key: force turnovers.
Florida's defense struggled to stop the run against Alabama, LSU & State. Bobo's offense must do the same. Ealey gets some help with Caleb back. The 'Dogs OL should win this battle up front. Look for Bobo to have a 3-4 WR package to exploit the Gators nickel/dime package (all back-up CB are freshmen). And that A.J. Green-Janoris Jenkins match-up should be special.
