Nat Hudson Dominated in 1980 Tech Game

Broke down the game video of the 1980 win over Georgia Tech this week and was reminded of a great moment on Georgia football history. Herschel broke Dorsett's freshman rushing record that day, as we cruised to a 38-20 win at Sanford Stadium. And he broke it with a 4th quarter 65 yard TD dash. Sanford Stadium rocked.
But as I watched the game unfold again, I also realized what a dominating performance OT Nat Hudson had that day. No wonder Herschel went for over 200! Hudson absolutely crushed GT DE Lance Skelton. Knocked that guy off the ball all day. Swallowed him up. Pushed him around. Bullied him. It was absolutely dominating.
I love the fact that Nat gets mentioned most of the time, when we get to relive that "Buck to LIndsay" play. His block allowed me to buy some time, until LIndsay could find a hole in the zone coverage. But I never realized just how great he was against Tech that season.
Spoke with OL Coach John Kasay at our '80 reunion several weeks ago, and we talked about Nat. Coach Kasay believes Hudson was the best OT Georgia has had in the last 40 years. Watching the Tech game again, I can see why.
I always regarded Nat as one of the best teammates I've ever had. He was a gentle giant off the field. And it was comforting being next to him on the field. His presence gave me a feeling of confidence. Nat was 6'5", 275 pounds, and could run like a young Tony Gonzalez. He was an amazing talent. And he protected me as if I was his brother.
