Staff Changes Up Next?
It's nice to beat Tech and important to be bowl eligible, but there is a white elephant in the room. Most Georgia Bulldog fans want to know: Can Richt can turn this program around...immediately?
Eleven losses in two seasons. And that number could turn into 12, before the year ends. Plus, there should be a sense of urgency, because the national spotlight also looms, when the 'Dogs take on Boise State, in the Chick-fil-a Kick-off Game. That's 9 months and counting folks.
McGarity is sticking with Coach Richt. Grantham is locked in. Bobo and Searels appear safe. So, the changes start here.
Garner and Van Halanger appear the most vulnerable. Richt's staff has made some mistakes recruiting and the strength & conditioning program has been under fire for a few years now. Expect changes.
Coach Garner is currently the Assistant Head Coach, the Defensive Line Coach, and the Recruiting Coordinator. Bet McGarity is taking a close look this. One move would be to bring in a new recruiting director and/or DL Coach. Offer Garner an opportunity to do one or the other, but not both. That's too much responsibility for one coach to handle. Can't tell you how many times I've heard a high school coach say, "He never called me back." There also have been whispers of Garner skipping out on some defensive staff meetings, so he can "recruit." Simply not enough time in the day to get it all done correctly.
And a new Strength & Conditioning hire is probably going to come down first. The perception is Georgia lags behind in this area. Can't have that. Van Halanger's "Mat Drills" are considered as outdated. Critics say we are getting pushed around, because our guys aren't strong enough. The handwriting is on the wall here.
These are tough times. Can't stay the same.
In the next blog, I'll take a close look at personnel.
