Grantham's 2011 Bulldog Defense
McGarity & Richt are searching for ways to get this situation turned around. The quickest way to do that is to find some impact players. You might have heard the term: "difference-makers." That's what this program needs. And the staff is out recruiting right now selling "early playing time." Help is desperately needed on defense.
Grantham's defense will get a boost at linebacker, with the addition of Jarvis Jones and Richard Samuel. Expect those 2 to start inside. Cornelius Washington returns outside. That leaves another outside spot up for grabs.Christian Robinson and Marcus Dowtin provide quality depth inside. Still waiting on Vasser and Gilliard to step up. Jarvis Jones looks like a star and that would be a huge boost.
The secondary appears set, with Boykin, Smith and Commings returning at CB. Rambo returns at strong safety. The key is Alec Ogletree, who was recruited to be a big-time player at free safety and got a taste late this season. If he emerges as an All-SEC player that would be a huge boost. Nick Marshall is a special talent, who has already committed. He might be able to come in and be a "difference-maker" at CB.
The big concern on defense is up front. Tyson and Abry Jones are returning starters, but neither won any awards. DeAngelo appears to be a better fit at DE. Priority #1 needs to be plugging in a force at the nose. Can Kwame Geathers be that guy? Maybe. Reportedly we are hitting the JUCO scene hard, targetting DT Jonathan Jenkins (6'4" 330) and DE Cornellius Carradine (6'5" 250). Sure would be a huge boost to find a Fairley or a Cody. Two studs from last year's recruiting class to keep an eye on are Garrison Smith and Mike Thornton. This position group is mission critical. Got to find some physical players fast.
Grantham should be staying at the Holiday Inn in Thomasville, going after the state's top-rated prospect, DE Ray Drew. Garner needs to be working the JUCO scene. No time to waste. We'll be staring at Boise State and South Carolina in 9 months.
