Step #1 in Plan: Offer Garner Great Opportunity
Richt & McGarity need to "Shock the System.". One move has already been made with the Strength & Conditioning Program, by replacing Van Halanger with Coach Tereshinski. That 2010 stat of going 0-4 in games decided by 7 points or less made this change happen. All that "Finish the Drill" talk was a sham this past season. But that change is simply not enough.
Another bold move needs to be made. The fan base is starving for some kind of change. It would be a smart PR move to give them something more than just the strength coach change.
As I look over the staff, the guy that appears the most vulnerable to me is Rodney Garner, who holds down 3 titles (D-Line Coach, Recruiting Coordinator, Assistant Head Coach). Richt calls him "Coach G." And "Coach G" is pulling in "300 large" right now. Big pay for a guy that doesn't appear to be pulling his weight. Recruiting has taken a big step back, with some major misses of late.
On Garner's watch as Recruiting Coordinator, Georgia has been banned from Carver/Columbus, annually struck out with big-time players at Gainesville HS, and have been slow to move on top JC players that could provide immediate impact. Plus, the bottom line says they've made a lot of mistakes the last few years.
The latest episode would have been the final straw. JC DE Cornelius Carradine chose FSU over Georgia. His coach stated afterwards that FSU seemed to want him more than Georgia. Oh, really. Unacceptable. Now there is talk about "flipping" JC NT John Jenkins. Flipping? Why weren't we in on this guy, before he VC to Oklahoma State? Unacceptable.
Simply can't have those type things going on. Too much is at stake. Rodney has been an asset for many years, but it's time for a change.
How would removing Garner impact this recruiting class? Sources tell me that it would impact it very little. The Bulldogs have 16 VC's right now. Might lose WR Zach Witchett, who was temporarily kicked off his team earlier this season (red flag). Might turn off DB Damian Swann or athlete Quan Bray, but that's about it. Richt has McClendon, Ball and Belin on the staff to calm any concerns that the move is race related.
Again, Richt has to shake things up. A change here would do exactly that.
Offer him the DL job (to his credit his resume' shows former pupils Seymour, Stroud, Grant & Golston making it in the NFL). Shake things up by bringing in a new Recruiting Coordinator, after signing day. Use Rodney has an "Ace" recruiter during the offseason. Target some of the top guys and put him on them full-time.
Bobo has been a popular whipping boy for Georgia fans, but consider this: Bulldogs Offense broke a school record scoring 30-plus in 7 straight games this season and averaged 6.4 yards per play...with a RF QB. 'Dogs were #4 in the SEC scoring 34.2 points per game, #2 in Red Zone offense and #1 with only 14 turnovers. He's coached up Murray, Cox, Stafford, Shockley & Greene. And he's the best recruiter Richt has on the staff. Firing Bobo? That's crazy talk.
Step #2 will be revealed tomorrow.
