Step #2: SIGN LEGITIMATE OL & DL
Coach Richt is on the hot seat. The Bulldog football program is in decline and the fan base is devestated. Greg McGarity's office phone is ringing off the hook, with irate boosters calling in demanding change. The 'Dogs have gone from 10-3 to 8-5 to 6-7. Georgia is 8-8 in the SEC the last 2 seasons.
How does Richt turn it around? Get better players on the offensive & defensive line immediately. Period. At the LIberty Bowl, I watched Conference USA linemen whip our guys up front.
PRIORITY #1: SIGN IMPACT PLAYERS ON THE LOS. Besides Sturdivant, not sure if there is another legitimate OT on the roster. Besides Glenn, are there any physical guards? Jones & Lott don't look like dominant players at DE. Who's the impact guy at NT? Tyson? I'm disappointed to report that this is a year where the JC scene is deep in quality DL players and Georgia is on the verge of getting shutout. Unacceptable.
JC NT Johnathan Jenkins is an Oklahoma State VC, but Muschamp was in to see him yesterday, Rocker was selling Auburn recently, and the 'Dogs were in to visit before Christmas. He's the Cody-Fairley JC monster in 2011. Garner should be living in this guy's backyard right now. And why weren't we in on this dude last summer?
The domino's start to fall tonight, at the Under Armour All-America Game on ESPN. Griffin DE Xzavier Dickson chooses between Georgia and Alabama. Got to have him.
Super 11 Valdosta TE Jay Rome is leaning our way. Word is he's been recruiting for Richt. Get Aaron Murray on the horn selling, especially with the OL & WR prospects. A.J. Green owes us...get him texting.
RICHT AND HIS STAFF MUST FINISH STRONG. And that is something Coach Richt has not accomplished yet. WELL, DESPERATE TIMES CALL FOR DRASTIC MEASURES.
By now, you know the drill...Richt commits to certain guys early in the process and doesn't play that game of seducing the Super 11/5-Star players in the final weeks of the recruiting process. NOT THIS YEAR. He'll be out of his comfort zone. Bulldog fans should be thrilled with that idea. It's a change in philosophy. Change is good, right? .
Thomasville DE Ray Drew is still uncommitted. Moultrie OT Xzavier Ward is still up for grabs. Go, Go, Go...
Right now, there are 5 Super 11 players available. GOT TO CONVINCE THEM TO COME TO GEORGIA. For two reasons. To acquire the top players. And to give McGarity and the fan base hope. Rivals Top 10 rated players in the state shows that 7 are uncommitted. GOT TO GET THEM. Step outside the box and make some promises. Push Adams to help get them in school. Live on the edge a little bit. Do what it takes to get them (except paying them).
Richt's sales pitch is right on: "We need you to get Georgia back at championship level...play immediately...play at home...look at this list of Bulldogs playing in the NFL...we will help you get there...be apart of the Dream Team."
Georgia has a QB and a multitude of "skilled players"...Ogletree, Smith, Boykin, Tav King, Charles, Brown, Ealey, Wooten, Thomas. They will add some more on signing day: Marshall, Conley, Scott-Wesley, Sanders, Bowman...and hopefully Crowell, Rome, Mitchell, Swann and Bray. We can match up with the best teams in CF at the WR, TE, QB, LB and DB spots. That's not the problem. The problem's up front.
Richt's future at Georgia rides on this recruiting class and how much impact they are able to get out of them, especially on the LOS. This class is all about providing some much needed hope or this class is going to be helping another coach get the job done.
