Step #3: MAKE CRITICAL PERSONNEL DECISIONS
Coach Richt and his staff need to make some critical personnel decisions, before spring ball rolls around. Richt's job is to squeeze the most out of this roster. Get players in the right spot. And there are holes to fill all over the board. On both sides of the ball. After signing day, it'll be time to "find the best 22."
The PRIORITY should be on the LOS. Focus on O-Line & D-Line. Here is why.
On Offense, the O-Line returns 3 senior starters, with Sturdivant, Glenn and Jones coming back. But up for grabs are the two spots on the right side. And the upperclassmen that should be taking those spots over are not available. Where are the seniors & juniors? Ben Harden graduated and won't play his senior season. Tanner Strickland is another 5-year senior that may move on. A.J. Harmon is another senior, but he was ineligible for the bowl game. Justin Anderson would have been a senior OL but he's at nose now. So, young guys are going to have to play, probably in a back-up role.
KENARIOUS GATES looks like a starter at RG. HOUSTON, LEE & BURNETTE are young pups in the mix too. At RT, BRENT BENEDICT & AUSTIN LONG come off injuries to compete.
BIG DECISION #1: IS KWAME GEATHERS AN OPTION AT RT? He barely got on the field at nose. He played OT in HS. His 6'6", 315 lb. frame would pass the eye test at RT. If he isn't going to be the nose, then he needs to be lining up at RT.
On Defense, the D-Line returns DL DeANGELO TYSON & DE ABRY JONES. Highly-rated prospects GARRISON SMITH & MIKE THORNTON will get looks in their 2nd year. DERRICK LOTT is in the mix. Signing RAY DREW is a priority.
BIG DECISION #2: WHO IS THE NOSE? Tyson is a DE. Geathers has watched for 2 years. JUSTIN ANDERSON is a possibility. Signing JC DT JOHN JENKINS would obviously be huge, but that's a longshot.
Richt, Garner and this staff seem to put more of a priority on securing "skilled position players", but they desperately need impact guys up front to be successful. Right now, DANTZLER, DeBELL, MAYES & BAILEY are the highest rated committed O-linemen in this recruiting class. But can they help in 2011? Losing DICKSON to Alabama last night hurt. He looks like he is ready to play for us right now. .
I'm concerned about both sides of the LOS. We'll be counting on a lot of young players to produce.
However, I'm encouraged about some other areas.
At LB, JARVIS JONES & RICHARD SAMUEL resurface, after redshirt years. That will provide a big boost. If Houston goes pro, I can see those guys starting next to C. WASHINGTON & C. ROBINSON.
BIG DECISION #3: IS JUSTIN HOUSTON LEAVING EARLY FOR THE NFL? He needs to return and elevate his game. I don't believe he is ready yet. Another quality season and he's a Top 15 pick in 2012.
The secondary looks set with OGLETREE & RAMBO at safety and BOYKIN, SMITH & COMMINGS AT CB. NICK MARSHALL is a guy to keep an eye on.
Back to the Offense...
BIG DECISION #4: WHO REPLACES A.J. GREEN? There will be a drop-off, but how much? TAV KING looks ready to elevate his game, but MARLON BROWN is the key. He's polished enough to make an impact now. What he needs now is a confidence boost. Maybe that comes against Boise State. I expect ORSON CHARLES to double his 2010 production, with Green gone to the NFL.
BIG DECISION #5: CAN BRYAN McCLENDON BRING IN ISAIAH CROWELL? Can't count on CALEB KING anymore. EALEY needs a sidekick. CROWELL is instant impact. Love his ability to catch it. He's a big-play RB, which Ealey isn't. Hope Jarvis Jones is selling us hard. Got to have this guy.
