Searels Leaves For Texas Job
Not sure you can blame him for leaving. Probably got a bump in pay. Goes to a Top 5 program. Mac's got a little more security than Richt does right now. And Texas has stockpiled a few more quality OL than they've done at Georgia the last 3-4 years. It's a better job right now.
The timing is never real good when a coach leaves, but 2 weeks prior to signing day makes it a delicate issue that Richt will have to handle. O-Line recruits like Watts Danzler, Zach DeBell and David Andrews are hit hard with this news. Got to calm those fears.
By now, everyone is aware that Coach Richt is on the "Hot Seat", so luring some big-name OL coach in here is expecting too much. Where does Richt turn?
Two names immediately come to mind: Mac McWhorter and Hugh Nall. Two Georgia men. Both are available. Both have great love for the Georgia program. McWhorter just "retired" at Texas, where Searels replaces him. Retired? Please. This man is a football coach. Nall is an exec in the trucking business in Albany. Just a couple of years ago, I read an article on CF's Top OL Coaches. Both McWhorter and Nall were on that list.
The budget allows for a salary of $300,000. If I were Richt, I'd be looking these two guys in the eye in the next day or two. Both are qualified for the job. And you could probably get them. To me, that beats the heck out of bringing in some young coach, looking to move up, who has few contacts in the business. McWhorter and Nall are well-connected.
I wouldn't show them the depth chart during the interview though. It's scary. Maybe Searels was running from that.
