Valdosta Guys To Georgia!
Georgia got both Super 11 TE Jay Rome and his playmaking teammate Malcolm Mitchell. As a Valdosta man, that brings a smile to my face. Jay's Dad, Stan called me after the announcements and sounded relieved. My youngest brother Guy called from the Japanese steakhouse where Malcolm broke the news, and I could hear the excitement in the background. The Valdosta boys are staying home. One other note: Super 11 DE Ray Drew drove over from Thomasville to be there.
Rome had been a Bulldog lean for a few weeks now. Mitchell had been going back and forth between Georgia & Alabama. The Tide led early, but then Richt sold him on being able to play both ways at Georgia. Kirby Smart responded to that with a dual opportunity at Bama.
As I understand it, Mike Bobo connected with Mrs. Mitchell during the recruiting process and that gave Georgia the edge. Again, Coach Bobo has been one of CFs top recruiters at Georgia. And Mike did the job in Valdosta, under difficult circumstances.
Georgia's down. Alabama's up. Saban's hot. Richt's cold. Even some of the staff at Valdosta High reportedly tried pushing Alabama on these two guys. Go play for Saban at Alabama, they said...it's a sure thing. Bobo was able to recruit around that.
How? By talking about playing early. These guys would have to wait at Bama right now. At Georgia, they have a shot to play ball. And they connected with Bobo and Richt, who ended up outrecruiting Kirby Smart and Saban on these two.
Now they to get back to Athens and roll out the red carpet for Crowell and Jenkins this weekend. Ray Drew's announcement comes down on the 26th. Get those 3 guys and the Dream Team shoots to the top of the recruiting charts.
