Grantham's 2011 Bulldog Defense
Did you here the good news? Ray Drew, one of the top-rated HS players in the nation, is signing with Georgia next Wednesday. He is an impact guy, at a need position of DE/OLB. Drew can rush the passer.
Part of the "Dream Team" sales pitch is the opportunity to play immediately. Richt is telling these guys to: come help the 'Dogs beat Boise State in the opener. We need you.
But it's not like Grantham's defense is going to be playing a bunch of freshmen. If Jenkins signs and becomes the nose, then DeAngelo Tyson can slide out to DE...so the starters at 2 spots on the DL will be upperclassmen. At LB, Jarvis Jones and Richard Samuel step in, after redshirt years. They are both upperclassmen. Junior Cornelius Washington will hold down a spot at OLB. The secondary returns Boykin, Smith, Commings, Rambo and Ogletree. So, the top 5 are returning starters, and 4 of those guys are upperclassmen.
Drew might be the only freshmen getting playing time on defense.
Under the scenario listed above, Jones, Lott and Garrison Smith would be competing at the DE spot opposite Tyson. Drew could line up at OLB, and put his hand on the ground when Grantham plays nickel. With Washington and Drew at OLB, Grantham would have 2 talented dudes coming off the edge.
Still wondering about Geathers...he'd look good at offensive right tackle.
