Richt Hit With Violation on Crowell

No calling recruits this spring for Coach Richt. And he also gets a letter of admonishment put in his file. That's the penalty for staging a one-act play for Isaiah Crowell. It's a so-called secondary violation. The NCAA typically accepts the self-imposed punishment. That's what will happen here.
Richt had to get this guy. King and Ealey simply haven't been dependable. Alabama was on Crowell hard. It was time to "think outside the box." Isaiah and his family were coming to campus. Mark needed a plan to impress the kid. So, he came up with this. The 10-man formation, without a RB. Impressive. Crowell noticed immediately. Richt asked if he wanted to be the RB. He said yes, put on his jersey and lined up.
   Couple of things.
Richt was probably so excited about the "out of the box" plan that he never considered checking with compliance to see if this was a "game day simulation violation." It seemed harmless. It's not like they were down at Sanford Stadium putting on a big show.
And the report of a "rookie" left guard getting flagged for illegal motion and Sturdivant getting beat inside are untrue.
One more thing: these days, shouldn't the compliance dude be attached to the coaches hip pocket?
Richt is a little embarrassed by this, but it's not that big a deal. On the cheating scale, this barely registers. Not even in Kiffin's ballpark. Grades weren't altered, Money didn't change hands. Players formed a 10-man huddle. Big deal. Saban's wishing he had come up with this one.
Down at the coffee shop this morning, many of the guys were simply impressed that Richt had this much imagination.
And the trade-off? You can live with this. You got your man and you don't have to call recruits for a month. Not bad, uh?
