Grantham's Defense To Hunker Down?
For the Bulldogs to bounce back with a big year, the Georgia defense has to step up. Last year was average. Can't win the SEC, with an average defense. But I see signs that this unit will be much improved.
And a step up begins up front. Last year's D-Line was not good. But add an all-grown-up Kwame Geathers, JC product Jonathan Jenkins, and move DeAngelo Tyson outside to DE...and things are dramatically different. Obviously, I haven't seen Jenkins yet, but Geathers and Tyson are ready to play ball. Grantham told me that DE Abry Jones is stronger and more explosive. And DE Derrick Lott has shown some flashes of athleticism. Both are now over 300 pounds. Those guys are the Top 5 DL.
The LB has dramatically changed too. Add Alec Ogletree and OLB Jarvis Jones to the mix...both are All-SEC type players. "Tree" was awesome on G-Day...chasing down ball carriers, from sideline to sideline...locking down on receivers running crossing routes. Alec will be one of the more athletic ILBs in CF this season. Jarvis looks like a playmaker out in space. He can cover. And chase. Jones is an impact guy. Christian Robinson is the leader of this unit, at the other ILB. Cornelius Washington takes over for Justin Houston at OLB and he has come on strong too. Grantham told me he liked the way Cornelius flew around during the spring. Ray Drew will compete behind Washington this fall. Who are the back-ups? Chase Vasser made some noise at G-Day. Richard Samuel continues to come on too.
The secondary looks improved too. Boykin and Smith are quality corners. Commings can play ball at CB or safety. Shawn Williams forced a fumble on G-Day to live up to his #1 pick status. Rambo is in the mix. Jakar Hamilton could start at free safety. Jordan Love has improved and could earn time in the nickel/dime package. Damien Swann, Nick Marshall and Corey Moore arrive soon and are highly thought of.
As I see it, the Bulldogs are improved at all 3 levels of the defense.
Wonder if that Boise State center knows about Kwame Geathers?
