Isaiah Crowell To Start At RB?
It's not a good situation. But maybe the kid from Columbus can handle it? In fact, Coach Richt and the Bulldogs are now desperately counting on it.
To get him away from Alabama, the staff had to sell immediate playing time. The message: come to Georgia and start immediately, against Boise State on the national stage. Well, here we go. Be careful what you ask for, unless you're ready to handle it. He'll be the first true freshman to start at RB since Danny Ware in 2004.
Isaiah's skill set is impressive. Big play guy. Can make'm miss. Dangerous out in space. Listed at 210 pounds. Strong runner in high school. Ran for 1,721 and scored 18 TDs in HS last season. Excellent receiver. Not asked to block in pass protection much.
Is he mentally tough? Can he hold up physically? Those are 2 more question marks.
How much of the load is he capable of carrying in the first 2 games? Coach Bobo is wondering a lot about that question.
Figure Bobo will be calling around 30-35 runs a game. What's the plan, going into the opener? It's probably something like this: Crowell gets 15, Carlton Thomas gets 10 and Ken Malcome maybe 5, as a 3rd down, short-yardage back. Call that Plan A. Crowell can probably handle that workload. But anything more might be to much to ask.
As far as 3rd down goes, I can't imagine Isaiah being a big part of the plan to start the season. Too many blitzes to pick up.
The first think I want to see out of Crowell is an ability to run tough between the tackles. Right now, I wonder about that listed weight of 210 pounds. Is it really 190? Can he be a tough runner?
