3rd Down Big Key vs. Vols
Grantham calls 3rd down "the QB down." Good QBs convert. QBs that do a poor job don't. Well, Tyler Bray must be in that good catagory, because the Vols offense is converting on 3rd down at a 62% rate. That's impressive. Even Kellen Moore and Boise State are jealous of that high number. And 62% is the best in the SEC.
On the flip side, the 'Dogs defense is Hunkering Down on 3rd down too...holding opposing offenses to a 3rd down conversion rate of just 25%. That's the best in the SEC.
Something has to give tomorrow night at Neyland Stadium.
Coach Grantham is doing it with multiple looks. It's been a big package on 3rd down. He's gone with 3 down linemen, four DL and even 2 DL. There have been 3 LBs, 2 LBs...4 DBs, 5 DBs and 6 DBs. He's played zone. He's blitzed. He's showed blitz pre-snap and played zone. They've showed a zone look pre-snap and then, came with the blitz. And it has worked.
A QB is in his comfort zone, when he can anticipate what the defense is about to do. But when he can't...the pressure meter goes up. Uncertainty sets in. There is indecision. Things happen so fast at the snap of the ball, that mistakes are made, on where to go with the ball.
If a defense is going to mix up and do multiple things, obviously the guys still have to execute their assignment, so there is not a weak spot for the QB to exploit. That's where this second year in the system comes in to play. Grantham's defense is playing faster now. They get it.
