Heavy burden or guiding light, and which ever way you perceive your status as a team mate normally will dictate how you respond to the opportunities that are presented to you.
It appears that Zack sees his status as a team mate as more of a burden ( not the starter yet, must work extra hard with no guarantee, has a heavy duty to bear to his school, coaches, team mates and family) rather than a guiding light ie., follow the dictates of his coach ( a great leader and man),thank God every day for the opportunity to compete on such a grand stage ( a first class academic institution with a first class sports program)and finally to have direct control over the choices you make.
Zach made the wrong choice and now weight of that choice is coming crashing down on him.
All is not lost for Zach, but the way in which he meets this new and more trying challenge, will determine the type of man / team mate he becomes.
Buck is correct, Zach is not the first
( Brett Favre, Cary Collins etc.)nor will he be the last to fall from grace on his path to success.
In spite of all the pain you may feel now, you are fortunate to still have a choice which path you choose to follow.

Pretty much agree with you regarding the foolish mistake by the young UGA QB.

What I don't agree with is the many UGA apologists who declare this foolish mistake no big deal because:

a. They made similar foolish mistakes when they were in college.

b. Everyone who goes to college does this type of thing.

It doesn't matter if the village is a "speed trap" or not. It was a foolish, incredibly selfish act that reflects on UGA and Mark Richt's stated desire to cut down on this type of misbehavior.

Finally, he will be punished but you and I both know if it is in the best interest of the UGA football team as it relates to wins, it will hardly be the end of his career. Nor should it be.

Buck,

That Wonder Dog team of 1978 was a promise of good things to come. I was there to witness that 29-28 comeback win over Tech. I didn’t know who you were until that day, but I knew that in Buck Belue we had a quarterback who was a natural born winner.

During the final days leading up to National Signing day in 1980, every night when closing my bedtime prayer I asked: “and Father please let Herschel Walker come to Georgia.” He was the only missing piece this team of winners needed.

When I saw Herschel carry the ball against Texas A&M, I could not believe my eyes. His speed and power was unbelievable. I had never seen his equal, and I knew he’d never be here for four years. I believe that every member of that TEAM, on offense and defense, stepped up to a level of greatness that they probably did not know that they could achieve before the season began. I thank God for Coach Erk Russell what a motivator he was!

That 1980 Georgia Football Team was the answer to a dream and decades long prayer to see my Bulldogs proclaimed as the greatest team in America. Your team photo is on my wall, your names and heroic exploits are indelibly etched in my memory, and my heart is filled with the greatest love, admiration, respect, and gratitude that any one individual is capable of containing.

I thank each and every one of you for being a part of my dream come true.

HAPPY 30TH ANNIVERSARY
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS OF 1980

Jim Howard

Buck Can You Help?

Following the close of football season in 1976, I sent coach Dooley a hand drawn illustration detailing how the team would look dressed out in red trousers with the white jersey and the red helmet.

He sent me a letter in response, which I still have today. In closing his letter, he assured me that my idea would receive due consideration. The rest of the story is a small piece of UGA football history.

I have been searching for an 8”x 10” glossy, color photo, of Herschel Walker vs. Tennessee from the 1980 season. I want to frame it along side the letter that Coach Dooley sent to me. I have had no success on the internet, eBay, or at sports memorabilia stores. There is a photo of you and Herschel together at:

www.dawgbone.net/oldschoolarchives.html

I contacted them but they couldn't help me. Is there any way that you could help me locate a good 8’x10’ glossy copy of this photo?

Thank You for your great career, and your contribution to the UGA National Title of 1980 - It will never be forgotten!

Jim Howard

Great times. I graduated high school in 1980. Grew up about 30 miles from Herschel. I had heard all about him before he arrived in Athens. The first time I saw you play was the '78 Tech game. Still one of the best games I have ever seen.
Hard to believe it has been 30 years, but I am glad I was around to see it.

I know how great my memories are of that team. I envy you your close experience of that wonderful time. Of course a lot of it wouldn't have happened without you doing your part too! I wouldn't trade being a Dawg for any other place in the world!
